The lives of reporter Polly Perkins and her ex-boyfriend, Joe Sullivan, intersect. For the past three years, large robots have been roaming the Earth, taking what they need, and vanishingquicklythey appeared. Joe and his technical assistant Dex have been investigating and battling these mysterious robots. Meanwhile, many of the world's scientists have been systematically kidnapped. Dr. Jennings, believing that he is the next target, tells what little he knows to Polly. His beliefs are that Dr. Totenkopf, who has not been heard from in over thirty years, is carrying out a project he started prior to World War I, this project which may be associated with these robots. Polly and Joe, with Dex, join forces to find Totenkopf, which may not be easy due to their still antagonistic relationship. As they piece together Totenkopf's plot, Polly and Joe realize that stopping him from carrying out his grand plan of creating his version of a Utopian society may not beeasykilling him.
Sky Captain really entertained me.<br/><br/>Art Deco / 'Metropolis' styling, with super-futurism in happily ridiculous gadgetry is welcome,there's no question that we're suspending our disbelief at the get-go. <br/><br/>More attention to detail on period styling than we normally get, the film managed to incorporate different ages of style and technology and hold in its grasp and wholesome idealism which reflects the action/drama of the era.<br/><br/>The archetypal fraternity between Joe (Jude Law) and Dex (Giovanni Ribisi) is touching. And the strong leadership character portrayed by Jolie is an important augmentation.<br/><br/>In it's genre, I give this film a 10.
If comic books and graphic novels are your thing, then I suppose there is an audience for this thin, plodding, silly CGI effects fest. Otherwise, not enough action for kids; not enough story for the thinking person. About an hour into it, the plot finally starts to move forward, but no compelling characters, but nice costumes and hair.It feels like a foreign person's take on what Americana is.<br/><br/>The whole thing is made of trappings.This is one big who-cares of a movie. The only thing that's not cliché about this film is the "bad girl" love interest is really "butch" and there appears to be a visual joke where the filmmakers either tip their hats or flip the finger to "Titantic". In a nutshell, the whole film is Heaven's Gate shot on the set of His Girl Friday. I hope no one thinks this is the future of film.
Arresting at first but gradually trails off under the weight of its hyper-derivativeness and anxiety to please.
The two vials contained the material for Totenkopf's genetically engineered humans, his Adam and Eve. "Sky Captain" is Joe's call-sign, or pilot nickname. The story behind it remains unknown.
